WPI Field Hockey Edges Becker, 2-1

Leicester, MA --- Maggie Elbag (Rutland, MA) and Katie Nehmer (Southwick, MA) each notched their first goal of the season to help lead visiting WPI to a 2-1 victory over Becker in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers snapped a five-game losing skid and evens their record at 5-5.

After a scoreless first half, the Crimson and Gray got onto the scoreboard six minutes into the second stanza when Elbag knocked home a pass from Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) following a penalty corner. Maglione then added her second assist of the game and her team-leading sixth of the season when she set up Nehmer’s goal with 10:48 remaining.

Becker (1-8) cut the lead to 2-1 with 5:38 left when Kristal Swiderski (Warren, MA) found the back of the net following a penalty corner. Allison Thompson (Barre, VT) and Alicia Buccico (Oxford, MA) were credited with assists on the play.

WPI goalkeeper Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) was notched one save while Hawk netminder Ciara Lawrence (Costa Mesa, CA) turned away seven shots.

For the day, WPI enjoyed a 16-4 advantage in shots while holding a 13-2 edge in penalty corners..

Both squads will return to action with conference home games on Saturday. WPI will entertain Babson at 10am in a NEWMAC contest while Becker plays host to UMaine-Farmington in a NAC affair at 1pm.
