NAC Athletes of the Week (Week Ending September 3)

Men's Cross Country

  Runner of the Week - Grandon Smith, Castleton (Sr. - Newtown, Conn.)

Smith picked up right where he left off last season, capturing the individual meet title at the 5K Southern Vermont Invitational on Saturday. He paced the field of 51 runners with an impressive time of 16:56, leading teammate Gannon McKearin to the finish line by just over one minute. Smith ran at a pace of 5:28 to help lead the Spartans to a second-place team finish overall.  

 

 

 

 

 

Co-Rookie of the Week - Jeremiah Sands, UMaine-Farmington (Fr.)

Sands took first place at the UMF Invitational at Mt. Blue on Saturday with a time of 17:19 in the 5K.

  Co-Rookie of the Week - Zach Hartman, Husson (Fr. - Dover, N.H.)

Hartman set the pace Saturday morning at the 2017 Fen's Classic, becoming the first male cross country runner in program history to win an event. He completed the men's 5k with an impressive time of 16:50 to help lead the Eagles to a second place finish in the opening meet of the season.

Runner of the Week - Abby Shafer , New England College (Sr. - Egg Harbor Township, N.J.)

Shafer placed first at the UMaine-Farmington Invitational on Saturday with the only sub-20 time, clocking in at 19:56, nearly a minute faster than the second place finisher. She ran the 5k race at a pace of 6:25.   

 

Rookie of the Week - Maggie Hickey, Green Mountain (Fr. - Chesterville, Maine)

Racing in her first collegiate meet, Hickey was the lead runner for the Eagles at the Southern Vermont College Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday. The freshman placed fifth overall out of 59 runners in a time of 24:10 over the challenging mountainous 5K course. Her result along with two other top ten times by Eagles runners helped the team place first overall out of nine teams competing.

Player of the Week - Paige Viens, Colby-Sawyer (Sr., F - Middlebury, Vt.)

Viens scored one goal in each of Colby-Sawyer's games last week. She began with the game's first goal against Little East Conference power Keene State in a close 2-1 loss to the Owls. Viens then notched a goal in a 7-2 win over NECC preseason favorite Elms College.  

 

Defensive Player of the Week - Anne Marie Provencal, Husson (Sr., GK - Skowhegan, Maine)

Provencal had a solid performance in the Eagles' opening seasons wins against Wellesley and Southern Maine. The senior played all 140 minutes between the pipes, while making 20 saves and allowing just four goals in a 4-2 win versus Wellesley and a 3-2 win against Southern Maine. The keeper posted an .833 save percentage and 2.00 goals against average on the week. 

 

Rookie of the Week - MacKenzie Oberholzer, Thomas (Fr., GK - Greencastle, Pa.)

Oberholzer earned a shutout victory in her first collegiate game on Friday. She led the Terriers to a 1-0 win over the defending Little East Conference Runner-Ups, the University of Southern Maine, stopping all six shots she faced.

Player of the Week - Adam LaBrie, Thomas (Jr., F - Yarmouth, Maine)

LaBrie picked up where he left off last season as the 2016 NAC-leading scorer, as he tallied four goals on six shots in two games this week. The junior netted a hat trick in the first 38 minutes of play on Friday as the Terriers defeated Unity College. In a victory over Fisher on Sunday, LaBrie scored the opening goal of the contest.

 

Defensive Player of the Week - Evan Backus, Maine Maritime (So., D - Farmington, Maine)

Backus was an anchor for Maine Maritime's back line in the 2-0 victory over the University of New England on Friday, the win was MMA's first win over the Nor'easters since 2011. Backus was part of a defense that only allowed nine shots. 

 

Rookie of the Week - Joseph Holloway, Johnson (Fr., M/F - Essex County, England)

Holloway tallied four goals and an assist for nine points in his first two collegiate games over the weekend. In the Badgers win over Vermont Tech on Friday, Holloway notched two goals and an assist in the 5-2 victory. The rookie notched two more goals on Sunday as Johnson defeated UMPI.

Player of the Week - Hannah Fields, Colby-Sawyer (Jr., C - Chapleigh, Maine)

Fields made her Colby-Sawyer debut count in a big way in the Chargers' lone game over the opening weekend. The junior scored the first two goals of the game and assisted on Colby-Sawyer's third en route to a 3-0 victory at Norwich.  

 

Defensive Player of the Week - Sam Mitchell, Colby-Sawyer (So., GK - Chester, N.H.)

Mitchell guided the Chargers to a 3-0 victory at Norwich in the team's lone game of the opening weekend. The sophomore goalie stopped all five shots she faced to record the clean sheet.   

 

Rookie of the Week - Maya Golowasch, Green Mountain (Fr., M - West Harrison, N.Y.)

Golowasch scored five goals in her first two collegiate games helping the Eagles to their first 2-0 start since 2006. Of the seven goals the team has scored, the freshman has accounted for both game winners and scored all four times in the team's 4-2 win against Yeshiva. She also notched the first goal of the game in the team's 3-0 win against Paul Smith's on Saturday.

Player of the Week - Ashley Woodside, Colby-Sawyer (Sr. - Hampden, Maine)

Woodside won both of her No. 1 singles and both No. 1 doubles matches to help the Chargers earn a pair of good wins over Gordon and Nichols. The senior defeated Gordon's top player 6-3, 7-6 (3) and also earned a straight sets victory over Nichols No. 1 6-0, 6-4. Woodside combined with freshman Yashu Yang for a pair of convincing No. 1 doubles win by scores of 8-2 versus Gordon and 8-4 against Nichols. 

 

Rookie of the Week - Yashu Yang, Colby-Sawyer (Fr. - Kunming City, China)

Yang made her collegiate debut this weekend and won all four of her matches to help the Chargers to a pair of great wins over Gordon, 7-2, and Nichols 5-4. Yang cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gordon's No. 2 player and then played the match of the year thus far to earn a comeback win against Nichols. After dropping the first set 6-4, Yang pulled even with a 6-4 win of her own in the second set. Trailing 5-2 in the third set and facing multiple match points, Yang kept fighting and came all the way back to force a tie break. She won the tie break 7-2 and the match to lift the Chargers to the victory over the CCC preseason favorite. Yang also combined with Ashley Woodside for a pair of convincing No. 1 doubles win by scores of 8-2 and 8-4.

Player of the Week - Alexa Cacacie, Maine Maritime (So., MH - Manahawkin, N.J.)

Cacacie had an impressive opening week for the Mariners, totaling 42 kills (3.00/set), 11 digs, 10 blocks, and six aces in the Mariners 1-2 week. The sophomore tallied 15 kills, four digs and four blocks in the Mariners' 3-2 win over UNE, which was MMA's first victory over the Nor'easters since 2009. In a tough loss to Southern Maine, she tallied 15 kills, four blocks, three digs and two aces. In a hard fought 3-2 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, she tallied 12 kills, four digs, four aces and two blocks. 

 

Defensive Player of the Week - Maria Perez, Maine Maritime (So., L - San Juan, Puerto Rico)

The 2016 NAC Defensive Player of the Year picked up right where she left off, leading the Mariners defensively in a tough 1-2 week, tallying 4.29 digs per set to go along with 11 service aces and eight assists. In the Mariners first win over the University of New England since 2009, the sophomore tallied a match-high 20 digs, while also recording five aces and three assists. On Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Southern Maine, Perez led all players once again with 18 digs, and chipped in with an assist. In a 3-2 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, the libero recorded a season-high 22 digs, and six aces, while also putting up four assists.   

 

Rookie of the Week -Dreka Griffin, New England College (Fr., MH - Calera, Ala.)

Griffin led the Pilgrims to a 2-1 record on the strength of 3.00 kills per set. The freshman middle hitter had double-figure kills in both NEC victories, tallying 13 kills and a .611 hitting efficiency in the team's 3-2 win over Southern Vermont before adding 13 more kills and a .409 efficiency in a 3-0 win over Curry. Griffin also led the team defensively at the net with six blocks, and served eight aces and tallied nine digs on the weekend.
