Dan Doyle is a Graduate of Bates College, where he was co-captain of the men’s varsity basketball team. Dan is also a graduate of the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at TuftsUniversity, and he holds honorary doctorates from Bridgewater State College and the University Rhode Island. He serves as a trustee at his Alma Mater, Bates College, and for the last six years, Dan has been chosen by the NCAA as its NCAA Foundation Distinguished lecturer. He was also named by the Sporting News as among the most influential people in sports.
Dan was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Brown University, and head men’s basketball coach at both Kingswood-Oxford School in Connecticut, and at Trinity College. He compiled an overall coaching record of 142-45, and in his last year at Trinity, where his team ended the season ranked 13th in the country, he was named New England College Coach of the Year.
Dan founded the Institute for International Sport at URI in 1986 after writing a paper at the Fletcher School regarding the creation of such an Institute. The Institute is housed in the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame building, a beautiful facility which was constructed in 1999, based on Dan’s raising of several million dollars for the construction. Among the Institute programs Dan has conceived are National Sportsmanship Day, The World Scholar-Athlete Games, The Center for Sports Parenting, The New England Basketball Hall of Fame, The International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, and two new initiatives of the Institute- The Center for Sports Leadership, to be housed in the Institute’s second building that will open in 2008, and Hall of Fame Press, a new publishing entity of the Institute which will publish 2-3 sport themed books a year. On April 18, 2007, Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel joined Dan at a major press conference at the Rhode Island State House to announce the Institute’s 2011 World Youth Peace Summit. The Summit will gather thousands of graduates of the Scholar-Athlete Games, as well as other delegates nominated by the United Nations.
For the last seven years, Dan has worked on “The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting”. Volume I of the Encyclopedia will be in bookstores in March 2008 and Volume II will be in bookstores in 2009. Dan is also writing a 200 page manual titled “The Master Coach,” which will be in bookstores in ’08. The objective of this manual is to set the standard for coaching excellence and societal impact in the future.
The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting has been pre read by 50 distinguished individuals, including the likes of Senator George Mitchell, who calls the book remarkable; acclaimed novelist Mary-Ann Tirone Smith, who calls the book brilliant; and acclaimed motivational speaker Susan Summons and WTIC talk show host, Arnold Dean, both of whom state, “Doyle should win the Pulitzer Prize.”
