Husson Basketball Duo Named Academic All-Americans for Second Consecutive Season

Husson basketball players Shelby and Brock Bradford have been named first team District 1 Academic All-Americans. The duo are married, each in their senior season at Husson and captain their respective teams. The award is presented by ESPN the Magazine and is voted on by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

“It is a tremendous testament to Shelby’s work ethic that she has received The Academic All-American award two consecutive years" said Athletic Director Cindy Connelley. "And over his four years at Husson, Brock has been a tremendous role model and represents the best of Husson University. His selection as Academic All-American for the second consecutive year is a fitting tribute."

Shelby is an Occupational Therapy (MS) major, carries a 3.83 GPA, and is a three sport athlete (basketball, soccer, and lacrosse). On the basketball court, she currently leads the state of Maine in Division III women’s basketball in scoring with 18.2 points per game and rebounds with 11.7 rebounds per game. This season, Bradford leads the Eagles in scoring (18.2 points), rebounding (11.7), steals (70), assists (51), and field goal (53.5%). Named last year’s NAC Player of the Year, the senior was also named to the First Team All-NAC for the 2007-08 seasons.

Shelby was recently selected as the top "individual performance" of 2009 by WZON and the Bangor Daily News. Based on Bradford's contributions to Husson's women's soccer, basketball, and lacrosse teams, voters from across the state of Maine selected her "as the ultimate athlete."

She capped off her soccer career as the all-time leading scorer in women's soccer history with 64 goals and 37 assists and was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region Team for the third consecutive year. During the 2009 lacrosse season, Bradford recorded team highs in goals, assists and ground balls (setting the NCAA single season ground ball record).

Her husband Brock is a Public Accounting (MS) major, carries a 3.97 GPA and is a four year starter and two year captain for the Eagles. A two time First Team All-North Atlantic Conference (NAC) selection, Brock is the team’s 2nd leading scoring with 15.7 points per game and assist leader averaging 4.9 per game.

“Brock places himself in an elite category,” says Head Coach Warren Caruso. “Not only is he a two time first team all conference performer but now a two time Academic All-American. No one in the program’s history has achieved that success as a student athlete. He’s had a tremendous impact on our program over the last four years that will carry forward over many years to come.”
