Becker takes home second consecutive NAC Women's Tennis title with 12 points

Castleton, VT-The Becker College women’s tennis team
took home its second-consecutive North Atlantic Conference
women’s tennis championship, collecting 12 points to best the
four-team field.
Host, Castleton State College, wound up second with 10 points,
while Bay Path finished third with 7.5 and Johnson State fourth
with 1.5.
Bay Path College’s Raquel Babeu took home the individual
championship in first-flight singles, winning 7-5, 6-1 over
Becker’s Allison Flynn.
In second-flight singles it was Becker’s Catie Sivret
earning the win with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Castleton’s Jamie
Olson.
Colleen Murphy won a marathon battle in third-flight singles, 6-1,
2-6,
11-9 over Bay Path’s Julie Bendzin.
Bay Path also took home fourth-flight singles as Kara Fox defeated
Becker’s Danielle Stryker 6-3, 6-1.
Castleton collected fifth and sixth flight singles as Mary Kay
Capone and Meg Kucynski-Sherwin each wrapped up undefeated seasons
with their wins. Capone defeated Becker’s Mandy Kennedy 3-6,
6-0, 7-5 while Kuczynski-Sherwin defeated Becker’s Kristina
Drabkowski 7-5, 6-2.
In doubles action Becker won two out of three which would prove to
be the winning edge. Flynn and Sivret teamed to defeat
Castleton’s Olson and Kim Allen in the first flight 8-3. In
second flight it was Murphy and Stryker taking down
Castleton’s Charla Klaas and Emily Hallett 8-6.
Castleton would win third-flight doubles 8-5 as Capone and
Kuczynski-Sherwin defeated Bay Path’s Cristina Ruiz and
Yolian Ortiz.
The tournament culminated with the announcement of the
all-conference team, including Team Sportsmanship Award, Coach of
the Year, Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors. All
awards were based on conference coaches voting.

Becker leads NAC Women's Tennis Championships after day one
Castleton, VT-The Becker College women’s tennis team took
home seven points in the North Atlantic Conference Women’s
Tennis Championships on day one to lead the event.
Host, Castleton State College, currently stands in second with six
points, while Bay Path is currently third with four points. Johnson
State was shut-out on day one, and looks to gain ground in the
consolation events on day-two.
Castleton’s Kim Allen and Becker’s Colleen Murphy are
locked in a suspended #3 singles match due to rain. Murphy
currently leads 4-2 in the first set, with the seventh game tied at
15-15.
#1 seeded Raquel Babeu from Bay Path and #2 Allison Flynn of
Becker will square off tomorrow for the conference championship in
first flight singles. Second flight singles likewise held seeds as
Becker’s Catie Sivret (#1) will take on Castleton’s
Jamie Olson (#2). #1 seed Julie Bendzin awaits her opponent in
tomorrow’s third-flight championship while Danielle Stryker
(#1 Becker) will take on #2 Kara Fox (Bay Path) in the fourth
flight championship. Top seed Mary Kay Capone (Castleton) will take
on second-seeded Mandy Kennedy (Becker) in the fifth flight.
The sixth flight produced the only upset in singles competition
as Becker’s Kristina Drabkowski (#3) will take top-seeded Meg
Kuczynski-Sherwin (#1) in the championship.
The top seeds held in first flight doubles as #1 Allison Flynn and
Catie Sivret of Becker will take on Kim Allen and Jamie Olson (#2
Castleton). In second flight doubles action Castleton’s
Charla Klaas and Emily Hallet (#1) will take #3 Colleen Murphy and
Danielle Stryker of Becker. Finally, in third flight doubles it
will be #1 seed Cristina Ruiz and Yolian Ortiz of Bay Path taking
on Mary Kay Capone and Meg Kuczynski-Sherwin (#2 Castleton).
The consolation and finals rounds will kick off tomorrow morning
at 9:00 am.
Castleton to host NAC Women's Tennis Championship
Castleton State College will host the North Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Championships this weekend, October 20-21. The flighted event features individuals from Bay Path, Becker, Johnson State and host Castleton.
Seeding was determined by comparison of conference records. The top seed will play the fourth seed to open play while the second seed will meet the third seed. Winners will advance to the flight championship. Points are awarded for each victory; one point for a win in the championship bracket and a half point for a consolation victory. A team champion will be determined by total points earned.
Competition will be held on campus at Castleton State College if weather permits. If the event is moved indoors matches will be held at the Grand Slam Tennis Center in Rutland, Vt.
