NAC Weekly Honors (Week Ending 9/30/18)

  

 

FIELD HOCKEY

Player of the Week

Kelci Faulkingham, Thomas (ME)

(Jr., M - Belfast, Maine)

Faulkingham scored twice and assisted on another goal in the Terriers 2-1 week. She scored the Terriers third goal in a 4-0 victory over Regis on Tuesday, then scored the game-winner in a 3-0 conference win over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday. She went on to assist on the Terriers only goal in a 2-1 loss to Colby-Sawyer on Sunday.

   

Defensive Player of the Week

MacKenzie Oberholzer, Thomas (ME)

(So., GK - Hancock, Md.)

Oberholzer had two shutout victories in the Terriers two wins this week. The sophomore shut out Regis in a 4-0 win on Tuesday, then quarterbacked the Thomas defense to a 3-0 conference win over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday.

   

Rookie of the Week

Christina Denis, Thomas (ME)

(Fr., M - Waterville, Maine)

Denis needed only one shot in the game to score her first collegiate goal in the closing seconds of a 3-0 conference victory over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday.

 

 

 GOLF

Golfer of the Week 

David Albright, Northern Vermont University-Johnson

(Sr., - Grantham,N.H.)

Senior David Albright had one of his best performances of the season leading the Badgers to first place in the Paul Smith's Golf Classic. Albright shot 70 to earn medalist honors, outshooting the next golfer by nine strokes. Albright shot a 34 on the front nine and a 36 on the back nine. This is the second time this season that Albright has earned medalist honors.

 

   

Rookie of the Week 

Josh Marshall, SUNY Canton

(Fr., Golfer - Syracuse, NY)

Marshall tied for ninth out of 37 golfers at the Paul Smith's Invitational finishing with an 83. The Roos finished in second place (330) out of seven teams trailing conference opponent NVU-Johnson (325) by only five strokes.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Player of the Week

Matthew Caron, Maine Maritime


(Jr., F - Scarborough, Maine)

Caron helped lead the Mariners to a pair of crucial conference victories, tallying four points over the team's two shutouts. In the Mariners' 2-0 victory over Husson, the junior forward notched the first goal and dished out an assist on the second score. Against Lyndon on Saturday, Caron's throw in earned him the assist on the game-winning goal.

   

Defensive Player of the Week

Evan Backus, Maine Maritime

(Jr., M - Farmington, Maine, 13)

Backus helped lead the Mariners to a pair of NAC shutouts this week over in-state conference rival Husson University and NVU-Lyndon. Backus anchored a defensive unit that contained offensive momentum and held the opponents to 11 shots and 6 shots, respectively, both under their season averages. The junior midfielder also chipped in on offense with the game-winning goal against Lyndon on Saturday.

   

Rookie of the Week 

Justin Bell, Thomas (ME)

(Fr., F - Hamilton Parish, Bermuda)

Justin Bell had a hand in both Terrier goals in a 2-0 conference victory over UMaine-Farmington on Saturday. The Freshman scored his fourth goal of the season in the 43rd minute to put Thomas up 1-0, then assisted on Josh Morrissey's insurance goal in the 82nd minute for the three-point game.

   

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Player of the Week 

Makayla Lewis, Maine Maritime

(Sr., F - Purcellville, Va.)

Lewis helped lead the Mariners to their fifth-straight shutout with five points in the team's 6-0 victory over NVU-Lyndon. The senior forward tallied the eventual game winner when she scored on a penalty kick and followed that up just a few minutes later with a header goal. Lewis also dished out an assist.

   

Defensive Player of the Week 

Allison Wakefield, SUNY Canton

(Jr., GK - Mastic, NY)

 

Wakefield combined to make 15 saves in just under a game and a half in goal this week. The junior stopped 13 of the 15 shots she faced to keep the Roos in the game throughout in a 2-0 road loss at Alfred State. She followed that up by stopping two shots in the first half on the road at Maine Presque Isle and then came out in the field in the second half. Wakefield neutralizd the one that got passed her by tying the game in the 62nd minute on just her second career goal and first of the season as the Roos went on to defeat the Owls 2-1.

   

Rookie of the Week 

Margot Simeon, Maine Maritime

(Fr., M - Findlay, Ohio)

Simeon helped lead the Mariners to their fifth-straight shutout with two goals in the team's 6-0 victory over NVU-Lyndon. The freshman midfielder scored unassisted in the 34th minute then knocked another one back a mere eight seconds later.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Player of the Week

Meridith Blessard, Husson

(Sr., - Lincoln, Maine)

Paired up alongside Ashley Matlock, Meridith Blessard became the winningest Eagle in doubles action in program history with her 23rd win on Sunday, taking down the Badgers duo. Her successes also helped Husson earn the top seed for the 2018 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's tennis championship tournament while going undefeated this season, 8-0. Blessard also grabbed a doubles win with Matlock, 8-0, against NVU-Lyndon on Saturday and a win in singles action against a Badger on Sunday.

   
 

Rookie of the Week

Ashley Matlock, Husson

(Fr., - Caribou, Maine)

Matlock played two doubles and two singles matches this week, and did not relinquish a single point in either singles match. She swept both Northern Vermont University-Lyndon and NVU-Johnson on Saturday and Sunday with the help of teammate Meridith Blessard in doubles action, dropping only 2 games along the way. With her help, the Eagles earned the No. 1 seed for the 2018 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's tennis championship tournament while going undefeated this season, 8-0.

 

 

VOLLEYBALL 

Player of the Week

Marissa Ixtlahuac, SUNY Canton

(Jr., MB - Carthage, NY)

Ixtlahuac had a big week over four matches that included tallying 2.50 kills/set while hitting at a .295 clip (40-14-88). The junior's best match came in a five set loss to SUNY Potsdam where she posted a career-high 23 kills and just three errors on 37 swings (.541). The 23 kills shattered her previous career best of 16 from the 2017 season. For her performance at the Canton Classic over the weekend she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

   

Defensive Player of the Week

Peyton Robinson, SUNY Canton

(Sr., S - Bloomfield, NY)

Robinson had a big week on both ends of the floor as she posted 47 digs (2.94 digs/set), 128 assists (8.00 assists/set) and hit at a .474 clip on 19 total attacks with just a single error. She also added four aces and three blocks. She had nine or more digs and 20 or more assists in every match posting week-highs of 48 assists and 17 digs in a five set loss to SUNY Potsdam. For her performance at the Canton Classic over the weekend she was named to the All-Tournament Team.

   

 Rookie of the Week 

Julie Van Etten, Northern Vermont-Johnson

(So., S - Montrose, PA)

Julie Van Etten contributed 93 assists over the course of last week. On September 24th in a 3-0 win against NVU-Lyndon, Van Etten averaged 7.00 assists per set giving her a total of 21 assists. On September 30th, she contributed 30 assists in a 3-0 win against NVU-Lyndon and 42 assists in a 3-0 win against Castleton.
