NAC Weekly Honors (9/9/19 - 9/15/19)





Player of the Week

Juan Velez, SUNY Delhi
Sophomore, M - Peekskill, New York

Velez led the Broncos to two wins this week. He notched two goals, including what would be the game-winner, in a 3-1 win over Bard. In that game, he took four shots, three were on net, and two were goals. On Saturday, Velez took two shots and scored two goals in the first conference matchup of the season, a 3-2 win at NVU-Johnson.



Defensive Player of the Week

Evan Backus, Maine Maritime
Senior, M - Farmington, Maine

Backus was instrumental in limiting opponents' scoring opportunities in the Mariners' 1-1 week. Tasked with covering the opposing team's most explosive midfielders, he shut down Colby's offense until the double-overtime heartbreaker ended 2-1 on Wednesday. Backus led the Mariners' to a shutout against Husson in their NAC opener, and also assisted on what would be the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory.




 Rookie of the Week

Trevor Gray, Maine Maritime
First-year, GK - Gorham, Maine

Gray recorded 135 minutes of shutout action in net over the Mariners' 1-1 week. He logged three saves in the first half of the 2-1 double-overtime loss to NESCAC's Colby College, and stopped all five shots he faced in the Mariners' 2-0 win over Husson in the NAC opener. The first-year keeper has not conceded a goal in all four net appearances so far this season.







Player of the Week

Kelsey Innes, SUNY Delhi
Sophomore, M - North Babylon, New York

Innes racked up 16 points this week, with a total of six goals and four assists in two games. First, she scored three goals and added three assists in a 7-1 win against Keystone. Then, in the NAC opener on Saturday, the midfielder notched three more goals and one assist in the 10-0 rout at NVU-Johnson.




Defensive Player & Rookie of the Week

Victoria Hanna, SUNY Canton
First-year, GK - Malone, New York

Hanna made an incredible 41 saves (.911 save percentage) over three matches. She opened the week with 16 stops as the Roos fell in the final second, 1-0 to SUNY Potsdam. The rookie made 11 stops after intermission, with two saves on the last-second play before the Bears put home the second rebound for a heartbreaking loss. On Saturday she keyed a 1-1 double-overtime tie for the Roos versus Thomas, making eight saves. The draw was a key result in the NAC opener for the Roos, after falling 3-0 to the Terriers a season ago. Hanna continued her tremendous week by upping her career-high save total to 17 against Brockport.




Player of the Week

Maddie Abbott, Lesley
Senior - Portland, Maine

Abbott picked up one of two wins in a 7-2 decision at UMass Dartmouth, taking the #1 singles match 6-4, 6-3 on Friday. Abbott returned to the court on Saturday to lead the Lynx to their third-straight conference win. She paired up with Grace Jovanovich for the 8-1 win at #1 doubles before taking #1 singles, 6-2, 6-2 on the road at SUNY Delhi.



Rookie of the Week

Grace Jovanovich, Lesley
First-year - West Bloomfield, Michigan

Jovanovich picked up one of two wins in a 7-2 decision at UMass Dartmouth, taking the #4 singles match 7-5, 6-1 on Friday. She followed up on Saturday with two wins in the third-straight conference win for the Lynx. She paired up with Maddie Abbott for the 8-1 win at #1 doubles before dominating #3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win on the road at SUNY Delhi.





Player of the Week

Rachel Melampy, Maine Maritime
Sophomore, OH - Marshfield, Massachusetts

Melampy was named the Maritime Classic MVP after leading the Mariners to a 3-0 week and their fourth-straight Maritime Classic Title. The sophomore totaled 44 kills (4.40 k/s), 15 digs (1.50 d/s), eight aces, five assists and two blocks. Melampy racked up 22 kills, nine digs, three aces and an assist in the team's 3-1 win over USMMA and followed that up with 10 kills, three digs, two assists, two aces and a block in the 3-0 win over SUNY Maritime. On Sunday, the outside hitter led the Mariners with 12 kills, three digs, three aces, two assists and a block in the team's 3-0 over Mass Maritime.



Defensive Player of the Week

Jenna Roat, SUNY Canton
Senior, LB - Penfield, New York

Roat had an impressive performance and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Oswego State Tournament after averaging 5.00 digs and 1.33 service aces per set in a 2-1 week for the Roos. She opened the week with match-bests 16 digs and six aces to go with four assists and a pair of kills in a sweep of Elmira. The senior followed that up with 14 digs, four aces and two kills in a sweep of Utica. Roat closed out the week with 15 digs and two aces in a loss to Oswego State.



 Rookie of the Week

Ashton Houppert, SUNY Canton
First-year, S - Lowville, New York

Houppert was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 7.33 assists and 3.00 digs per set at the Oswego State Tournament. She opened the week with a match-high 21 assists and added eight digs in a sweep of Elmira. The rookie followed that up with match-bests of 39 assists and 15 digs in a sweep of Utica. Houppert closed out the 2-1 week with six assists and four digs in a loss to Oswego State.





 Men's and Women's Cross Country honors are released on Tuesdays throughout the season. Men's Golf honors will return next week.
