  • Castleton, Husson Both Fall in ECAC Opening Round

    Castleton and Husson each fell in the opening round of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Regional Championship as the Spartans fell to Elms College on Wednesday, while the Eagles fell to Coast Guard on Thursday.

    Castleton, Vt. – The Husson Eagles captured their second North Atlantic Conference Championship in three years after defeating the Castleton Spartans 4-2 in the championship game Monday, May 6 at Spartan Field.

    Husson senior outfielder Shawn Smith was honored as the North Atlantic Conference Baseball Player of the Year in a vote by the league’s coaches, highlighting the league’s announcement of its 2013 All-Conference Team.

    Shawn Smith led Husson to a 5-1 week, batting .500 and scoring nine runs as the Eagles clinched the second seed in the NAC Tournament, earning Player of the Week honors. Kevin Keith was nearly untouchable for Colby-Sawyer, being named Pitcher of the Week after earning two wins and a save, while striking out 16 in 15 innings pitched. Ben Keene hit safely in four of five games for UMF, earning Rookie of the Week honors with a .571 batting average.

    Husson's Pat Thibodeau proved to be a catalyst atop the Eagle lineup, batting .500 with 12 runs scored and five more driven in to earn Player of the Week honors. Patrick Riley was a perfect 2-0 for Castleton, striking out seven in 13 innings while allowing just one earned run and was named Pitcher of the Week. Ben Keene posted a .450 batting average for UMF and was perfect in the field to earn Rookie of the Week accolades.

    Cody Vigue and Dillon Emerson led the Thomas offense this week, earning Player and Rookie of the Week honors respectively. Colby-Sawyer's Kevin Keith picked up a win and a save, striking out eight in 8.2 innings en route to earning Pitcher of the Week accolades.

    Husson's Shawn Smith and J.T. Whitten provided plenty of offense to lead Husson to a 5-1 week, earning Player and Rookie of the Week respectively. Each smacked a three-run home run and provided six RBI on the week. Connor Johnson pitched his way into the history books at Castleton, twirling just the fifth no-hitter in program history to earn Pitcher of the Week honors.

    Castleton swept its conference-opening doubleheader from Colby-Sawyer this weekend, thanks in large part to Tyler Lord and Patrick Riley. Lord was an offensive catalyst for the Spartans, going 4-for-6 with three RBI to earn Player of the Week honors. Riley pitched a complete-game three-hitter, allowing a single unearned run in the win and was named Pitcher of the Week. Derek Kane opened his career at Thomas batting an impressive .500 over seven games with eight RBI to earn Rookie of the Week accolades.

    Castleton's Connor Hoagland and Adam Greenlese led the Spartans in a 1-0 win over Coast Guard as Hoagland singled and scored the only run Greenlese needed as the junior twirled seven shutout innings to earn the win as the duo garnered Player and Pitcher of the Week honors. Husson freshman pitcher Brandon Reilly pitched eight innings, allowing two earned runs in just his second career start to pick up a win over Bates and earn rookie of the Week accolades.

    Colby-Sawyer's Cameron Knight had an impressive start for the Chargers, batting .500 with 11 RBI including a three-run homer to earn Player of the Week honors. Teammate Kevin Keith was dazzling on the mound in two starts, going 2-0 with 16 strikeouts in 12 innings and was named Pitcher of the Week. Connor Hoagland impressed for Castleton in his first collegiate action, going 6-for-17 with five RBI to earn Rookie of the Week accolades.
  • Castleton Picked to Win NAC Baseball Title

    Castleton has been picked to successfully defend its 2012 conference championship in a preseason poll of the North Atlantic Conference baseball coaches. Castleton finished with 44 points and three first-place votes, just two points ahead of Husson University which also garnered three first-place votes. Colby-Sawyer finished third with 38 points and the remaining first-place vote.
