Lancaster, NY - Thomas College won the crossover title and the 2019 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men's Tennis Championship with a 7-2 victory over Lancaster Bible College on Sunday afternoon at the Tri-City Tennis Club in Latham, New York.
The NAC has partnered with the NEAC in the sport of men's tennis since the 2010 season. The NAC competes as associate members of the NEAC, with each conference divided into an East and West Division. Each division holds a championship and the two divisional champions meet to determine the conference champion. Thomas College and Lancaster Bible each won the Divisional Championships and the opportunity to compete for the NEAC Championship.
Thomas College emerged with a 2-1 lead after doubles competition with 8-2 wins from No. 1 and No. 2 pairs Ryan Chasse/Kaleb Payson and Jared Waterhouse/Yontz Sutton, respectively. Lancaster Bible third doubles pair of Yancy and Derice Butler prevailed 8-6 against Christo Naranja and Jose Afonso.
Chasse (6-3, 6-2), Payson (6-4, 6-2) and Waterhouse (6-3, 6-1) went on to win first, second, and third singles against Luke Newberry, Tyler Norris, and Yancy Butler, respectively.
Lancaster Bible No. 4 Ming Bowser prevailed over Sutton in a tiebreak, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Naranja and Afonso bounced back from defeat in doubles to win the fifth and sixth flights against Kevin Vallette and Derice Butler, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-4, respectively.
