Castleton Repeats as Men's Tennis Champions

(Worcester/Leicester, Mass.) - Castleton State College men's tennis team won the North Atlantic Championship for the second straight year. The Spartans have won the team title three out of the last four years. Castleton finished with 14.5 points, Johnson State College 9.5 points, Becker College 4 points and Thomas College 3.5 points. The tournament was held on Becker College's Leicester campus.

Castleton won three singles titles, swept all three doubles titles, and finished second in two other singles matches. Johnson State who finished runner-up for the second straight year won two singles titles and finished second in three singles and two doubles. Becker College, who was shut-out of last years tournament were runner-up in a singles and doubles match. Thomas finished last but won the number one singles title.

In singles actions, Thomas' Andre Giguere (Waterville, ME) squared off against Castleton's Robb Gray (Red Bank, NJ) in the number one slot, winning the match 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. In the day's longest battle, number two singles Castleton's Jessee Maranda (Waitsfield, VT) defeated Johnson's Dylan Louko (Colchester, VT), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-4). In number three singles Johnson State's Seth Pike (Waitsfield, VT) overwhelmed Castleton's Ted Panasci (Goshen,CT) 6-1, 6-0. At number four Johnson States Nick Gendron (Colchester, VT) defeated Ben Kinney (Unity, ME) of Thomas, 6-3, 6-2. In the fifth slot, Castleton's Ed Kolnaski (Mystic, CT) defeated Chris Kirwan (Worcester, MA) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. In the final singles competition of the afternoon, Jamie Cook (Bomoseen, VT) from Castleton defeated Cameron MacDonald (Roanoke, VA) of Johnson State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Castleton state won all three doubles crowns,  at number one Gray and Dan Hodgetts (Newton, MA) teamed up to beat Johnson States Louko and Neil Perron (Quechee, VT) 8-3.   The duo of Panasci and Kolnaski defeated Pike and Justin Kutler (South Burlington, VT) of Johnson State in the second slot 8-5. And finally Beckers Kirwan and Andrew Rasla (Norwood, MA) fell to Maranda and Jeremy Henderson (Lyndon, VT) 8-1.

Becker to Host NAC Men's Tennis Championship

The North Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Championships will be hosted by Becker College this weekend, April 21-22. Along with host Becker, Thomas, Johnson State and Castleton will compete in the two day, flighted tournament. Individuals will be seeded into flights prior to the tournament with the top seed in each flight playing the fourth seed, and the second seed against the third seed. The winners will play for the flight title. A team champion will also be determined. One point will be awarded to the winner of each flight and a half point to the consolation winner.
