LATHAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Oneonta men’s tennis captured the North Atlantic Conference championship with a 9-0 win against Castleton State. The Red Dragons cruised last week to the NAC West Division title while Castleton had won the East Division. The two division winners then met this afternoon at the Tri-City Tennis Fitness Club in Latham, N.Y. to decide the overall champion for 2010.
Oneonta (16-4) will have to wait for the NCAA Div. III tournament announcement to see whether they will get in as a Pool B team, which is awarded to schools that are independent or who play in a conference without an automatic berth. The NAC does not receive its automatic qualifier until the spring of 2012.
Winners for the Red Dragons today included senior Matt Steinhauser (Plainview/JFK) at first singles and at second doubles with partner Josh Slifkin (Ojai, CA/Nordhoff). Slifkin also won his match at fourth singles.
Taking the point at second singles was sophomore Adam Shapiro (East Rockaway/Lynbrook) while also winning at third doubles with his partner John Taft (Queensbury/Glens Falls). Taft also won in straight sets at fifth singles.
Junior Will Sacco (Canandaigua/Naples) won in straight sets at third singles while teaming with classmate Jon Dorin (Lynbrook/Lynbrook) to win 8-2 at first doubles.
Oneonta’s final point came from sophomore Dan Evans (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills) where he won, 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.
