NAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Honors (Week Ending April 1)

TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Ryan Barry, Castleton (Jr., Sprints - Merrimack, N.H.)

Barry came away with a pair of top-10 finishes in two sprint events to lead the Spartans on the track at Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday. The junior won his heat in the 100-meter dash, finishing fourth overall out of 23 runners with a time of 11.51 seconds, which was less than a half-second out of third and just over three-tenths of a second out of first place. Barry also tied for seventh out of 26 runners in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.74 seconds, crossing the line seven-tenths of a second off the leader's pace. The Spartans finished fifth out of six squads in the meet with a total of 50 points.  

 

CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Justin Martin, Husson (Jr., Javelin - Winslow, Maine)

Martin dominated the javelin at the Occidental College Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic, as he earned first place surpassing his previously set school record last season. The junior tossed the javelin 58.06 meters which was good enough to qualify him for the New England Division III Outdoor Championship. His toss ranks him third in all of New England and 11th in the nation.

 

CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK 

Karl Nyholm, Colby-Sawyer (Sr., Throws - Concord, Mass.)

Nyholm highlighted a great start to the season by many Chargers, at Saturday's Snowflake Classic hosted by Tufts, by qualifying for the New England Championships in the shot put and discus. He began the afternoon by placing second out of 40 in the shot put with a qualifying mark of 15.02 meters, which ranks him third in New England and 24th in the nation. Nyholm then turned in another second place performance out of 24 in the discus with a distance of 43.00 meters, which also ranks him third in New England.

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Brodie Talbot, Castleton (Fr., Throws - St. Johnsbury, Vt.)

Talbot won two events at the Warrior Invitational at Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday. The rookie paced the field of 10 competitors in the discus with a heave of 40.92 meters, securing first place by over five full meters and shattering the previous school record by nearly three meters. He also claimed first place out of eight competitors in the hammer throw with a launch of 34.93 meters, besting the second place thrower by over 10 meters. Competing in three events on the day, Talbot took fourth out of 12 competitors in the shot put with a top mark of 12.51 meters. The freshman accounted for 24 of Castleton's 50 total points, as the Spartans placed fifth overall out of six squads in the meet.

 

 

AROUND THE NAC

Castleton opened its spring season at the Wesleyan Spring Classic on March 24. Tayler Larmie took the top spot in the weight throw, while freshman Brodie Talbot claimed first place in the shot put to lead the Spartans in the non-scoring meet. This past week the Spartans took fifth place out of six teams in the Warrior Invitational at Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday. Talbot won two events (discus and hammer throw) and Clayton Bailey also claimed a first-place finish in the javelin, as the Spartan throwers highlighted the team's performance. Castleton returns to action on Saturday, April 7, for the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational at Fitchburg State.

Colby-Sawyer began its outdoor season on Saturday at the Snowflake Classic hosted by Tufts University. The Chargers finished 15th out of 20 with 18 points. Senior Karl Nyholm highlighted a great start to the season by many Chargers by qualifying for the New England Championships in the shot put and discus. He began the afternoon by placing second out of 40 in the shot put with a qualifying mark of 15.02 meters. He then turned in another second place performance out of 24 in the discus with a distance of 43.00 meters. Colby-Sawyer will compete at Fitchburg State next weekend. 

UMaine-Farmington took third out of six teams at ECSU on Friday. The Beavers also saw two meets, the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational on March 24 and the Southern New Hampshire Spring Invitational on March 31, both cancelled. UMF will look to compete on April 6 at the Regis College Spring Classic and on April 7 at the Bowdoin Invitational.

Husson competed at the Occidental College Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic on March 10. The Eagles will be back in action on April 6 at the Regis College Spring Classic and on April 7 at the Bowdoin Invitational.

Johnson has not opened the 2018 outdoor season yet as the Southern New Hampshire Spring Invitational was cancelled this past weekend. The Badgers will look to compete on April 7 at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invite (Fitchburg State).

Lyndon competed at the Wesleyan Spring Classic on March 24. Rob Denton set a new school record in the shot put, throwing 8.48 meters. The Hornets saw the Southern New Hampshire Spring Invitational cancelled this past weekend and will look to participate at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on April 7.

UMPI has not competed yet this spring as the Owls had to scheduled meets cancelled. UMPI will look to compete on April 6 at the Regis College Spring Classic and on April 7 at the Bowdoin Invitational.
