Hodge had an impressive week for Lyndon, as she averaged 24.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, two blocks, and 1.5 steals in a 1-1 week. In a 68-57 win over Lesley, the junior netted 30 points, while shooting 62.5% from the field (10-of-16) and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. She added 13 rebounds, three blocks, two steals and one assist in the win. Then in a tough 64-58 overtime loss to Lasell, the center posted 19 points, 12 boards, and one block, steal and assist.
Rene Hudson, New England College
(Fr., G - Gallatin, Tenn.)
Hudson averaged 16.7 points, three rebounds, two assists and 1.3 steals, while shooting 43.6% from the floor (17-of-39) in a 2-1 opening week for the Pilgrims. She scored 20 points, while shooting 50% from the field (7-of-14) with three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in the team's 91-55 win against Daniel Webster. In a tough 63-59 loss to Eastern Connecticut State, she posted 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. To end the week, Hudson recorded 13 points and two assists in a 67-45 win over Fisher.
Castleton won its season opener at Elms College, 62-28. The Spartans did not allow the Blazers to score a single point in the third quarter. Amanda Beatty led Castleton with 17 points, Taylor Raiche collected nine points and 10 rebounds, and her sister Morgan Raiche added eight points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots. The Spartans open their home schedule against Plymouth State Tuesday.
Colby-Sawyer split a pair of games in the opening week of action at the Tyler Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Smith College. The Chargers began with an 81-65 victory over Salem State in which freshman Lexie Hamilton poured in 25 points in her debut. The team then fell to Smith 53-36 in the championship game, but received an impressive double-double from freshman Tianna Sugars who had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Colby-Sawyer has a quick turnaround and will host Suffolk on Tuesday evening.
UMaine-Farmington finished at 0-2 in the 2016-17 opening weekend. The Beavers played in the Ramada Roundball Classic on the campus of the University of New England. On Friday, UNE ran away with an 83-46 victory, while sophomore Morgan Crocker had a solid game for the Beavers scoring nine points and pulling down seven rebounds. On Saturday, Johnson & Wales (RI) was able to pull away in the second half for the 71-47 win. Senior Abby Hasson was selected to the All-Tournament team. This week, the Beavers travel to Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Monday.
Green Mountain opened the season with a 47-38 loss to Mount Holyoke on Thursday. The Eagles led for the better part of the opening half, but fell behind and failed to mount a comeback. The team was led by Mercedes Rideout who posted 10 points. The Eagles will be idle this week and pick back up after the Thanksgiving break by opening conference play at home against Colby-Sawyer on November 30 at 7:30 p.m.
Husson opened the 2016-17 season with a 77-50 win over Saint Joe's (Maine).
Johnson State went 2-1 to start the season, which began with a 77-68 win over Nichols on Tuesday. The Badgers competed in the Mustang Classic over the weekend, dropping the opening game to Elms College 75-71, then taking their second game 83-59 over Bay Path. Johnson State will travel to Middlebury on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Lyndon finished the week 1-1. The Hornets topped Lesley 68-57 in the season opener on Tuesday night. Lyndon then travelled to Lasell on Saturday, falling in overtime 64-58. Mikayla Hodge recorded double-doubles in both games, tallying 30 points and 13 rebounds on Tuesday and 19 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday. Lyndon is off for the week and returns to the court Tuesday, November 29 at Rhode Island College for a 6:00 p.m. start.
Maine Maritime went 2-1 this week to open the 2016-17 season. The Mariners fell to Saint Joseph's College on Tuesday, but defeated UMaine-Presque Isle on Friday and Colby College (for the first time since 2007) to claim the Pepsi Mariner Classic Championship.
New England College went 2-1 in the first week of the 2016-17 season. First year Rene Hudson made an immediate impact to the lineup and averaged a team-best 16.7 points on the week. The Pilgrims posted big wins against Daniel Webster and Fisher and suffered a four-point loss to Eastern Connecticut State.
Thomas jumped out to a 3-0 start to begin the 2016-17 season. In their season opener on Tuesday, the Terriers went on to beat the University of Maine at Presque Isle, 79-49. Freshman Karli Stubbs scored a team-high 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting (3-4 from three). Junior Amira Jones chipped in with 11 points and 13 rebounds. On Saturday, the Terriers hosted the University of Maine at Machias in the first annual Thomas Tip-Off Classic. Jones (18 points) and Jordan Turner (16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists) led the Thomas to a 65-40 victory. In the second day of the Thomas Tip-Off, the Terriers defeated Wheelock, 61-53, on double-double from Jones with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
