The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team won its fourth straight North Atlantic Conference (NAC)/North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) crossover title after Sunday's 9-0 victory over Penn State Berks at Tri-City Fitness.
The Chargers improve to 18-5 and tie a program record for wins in a season with the 2012 team. Colby-Sawyer earns its fifth bid to the NCAA Tournament and fourth straight. The tournament field will be released at NCAA.com at noon on Monday. Penn State Berks ends its season at 8-9.
Colby-Sawyer took a commanding 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. The No. 3 duo of Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and Michelle Lopes (West Hartford, Conn.) earned the first point of the afternoon by defeating Tessa Caltagirone (Reading, Pa.) and Marje Robinson (Reading, Pa.) 8-0. At the top doubles flight, Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) also won by an 8-0 score over Kianna Anderson (New Holland, Pa.) and Caroline Bashore (Hamburg, Pa.).Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) gave the Chargers a sweep with an 8-2 win at No. 2 over Erin Ginther (Collegeville, Pa.) and Cassidy Schultz (Reading, Pa.).
Woodside won at No. 2 singles to put the Chargers on top 4-0 and Blanchard clinched the match with victory at No. 5.
Ramsay (No. 1), O'Connor (No. 3), Miller (No. 4) and Christine Hill (Wallingford, Conn.) (No. 6) each won in straight sets.
Miller earned her 16th singles victory of the season to tie a program record with three other players.
