NAC Women's Tennis Weekly Honors

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Michelle Podnecky, Castleton
(So., - Bridgewater, VT)
Podnecky led Castleton to the NEAC title, and first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament with a pair of wins in the conference final. Podnecky defeated Amy Kemble 6-0, 6-2 in #1 singles play and teamed with Kate Bucci to defeat Kemble and Aimee Hoffman 8-1 in #1 doubles to lead Castleton to a 5-4 victory.

 

 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Chelsea Crehan, Castleton
(Fr., - Essex, CT)
Crehan posted a 6-2, 6-0 win in fifth singles and teamed with Brittni Racine for a 9-7 win in third doubles as Castleton earned a 5-4 win in the NEAC Championship. The Spartans will make their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Michelle Podnecky, Castleton
(Sophomore, Bridgewater, Vt.)
Castleton's Michelle Podnecky (Bridgewater, VT) earned Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament earning a 6-0, 6-0 win in the semifinal round and a 6-1, 6-0 win in the final round playing first flight singles. She also teamed with Kate Bucci (Wakefield, RI) for 8-0 and 8-1 wins respectively in first doubles.

Rebecca Quarantiello, Johnson State College
(So, #1 sgl/#1 dbl - Newburyport, Mass.)
Rebecca Quarantiello led JSC to a 1-1 week by winning at both #1 singles and #1 doubles in a 9-0 team win over Thomas on 10/9. Quarantiello's 6-3, 6-2 singles win sparked the Badgers to the NAC victory.

 

 

 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Maria Parr, Lyndon State
(Freshman, - Montpelier, VT)
On Tuesday, Oct. 6, Parr earned the lone victory of the match for Lyndon with a come-from-behind win over Plymouth State's Rachel Figura in No. 3 singles. She won the match by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). On Saturday, Oct. 10, Parr rallied a 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Becker's Laura Mimms in No. 2 singles before closing out the weekend with 6-1, 6-1 win over Thomas' Ali Brunelle in No. 1 singles Sunday in Waterville, Maine. For the season, Parr is 8-2 in singles play and 4-6 in doubles action.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kate Bucci, Castleton
(Soph., #2/#3 - Wakefield, RI)
Bucci helped Castleton to a 3-0 record on the week with wins over Massachusetts-Liberal Arts, Lyndon State and Plattsburgh State. The sophomore was a perfect 3-0 in singles, winning twice at #2 and once playing as a #3. She was also 2-1 in first doubles play.

 

 

 

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Brynn Paraschos, Castleton
(Jr. (First Season), #3/#4 - Bangor, PA)
Paraschos continues to shine in her first season of collegiate tennis. The junior was a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles competition this past week as Castleton won three matches versus Massachusetts-Liberal Arts, Lyndon State and Plattsburgh State respectively. Paraschos was 2-0 at third singles, 1-0 at fourth, 1-0 at first doubles and 2-0 at second doubles to improve to 12-1 (singles) and 10-3 (doubles) on the season.

Rebecca Irwin, Lyndon State College
(Junior, - Au Sable Forks, N.Y.)
Irwin won her fourth match in a row and ran her straight sets winning streak to eight Saturday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Johnson's Emily Miller in No. 2 singles. For the season, she is 4-2 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles action.

Kaitlin Cunningham, Lyndon State College
(Sophomore, - South Stratford, Vt.)
Cunningham won her fourth match by a 6-0, 6-0 score and ran her straight sets winning streak to eight with a win over Johnson's Orina Umansky in No. 6 singles Saturday. For the season, she is 4-2 in singles play and 4-2 in doubles action.

In Castleton's lone match this week, a 9-0 win over Johnson State, Podnecky was nearly flawless. The sophomore won first singles 6-0, 6-1 and teamed with Kate Bucci for an 8-0 win in first doubles.

Margaret George, Lyndon State College
(Freshman, - Glover, VT)
George won two singles and pair of doubles matches over the weekend to up her overall marks to 3-2 in both disciplines. She defeated Thomas' Kayla Giroux 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday and 6-1, 6-0 on Sunday. Together with teammate Kaitlin Cunningham, she also recorded 8-0 and 8-1 wins over the Giroux and Jess Driver.

Rebecca Quarantiello, Johnson State College
(So., 1 S, 1 D - Newburyport, Mass.)
Rebecca Quarantiello sparked JSC to a 5-4 team win over visiting MCLA on Sunday by winning in both #1 singles and #1 doubles play. Quarantiello defeated her singles opponent 8-0 in a pro set and then combined with Allie Cunningham to win in #1 doubles action 8-1.

Brynn Paraschos, Castleton State College
(Jr. (First Year), #3 - Bangor, PA)
Paraschos was 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles with partner, and fellow Quaker Stater, Charla Klaas (Bloomingdale, PA). Paraschos helped the Spartans to a perfect 3-0 week in which the Spartans did not drop an individual match, deafeating MCLA, Lyndon State and Thomas all by a score of 9-0. Paraschos has opened her collegiate career a perfect 7-0 in singles competition.

Bucci opened the 2009 season with four singles wins and a 2-2 mark in doubles with Michelle Podnecky. The junior helped Castleton to a 3-1 week, dropping just one set along the way.

Paraschos has started her first season of collegiate tennis with four-straight wins in singles competition. The Spartans went 3-1 on the week, with wins coming against Sage, Johnson State and UMass-Boston. Paraschos was also 3-1 in doubles action.
