NAC Women's Cross Country Weekly Honors (Week Ending September 3)

Abby Shafer , New England College
(Sr. - Egg Harbor Township, N.J.)

Shafer placed first at the UMaine-Farmington Invitational on Saturday with the only sub-20 time, clocking in at 19:56, nearly a minute faster than the second place finisher. She ran the 5k race at a pace of 6:25.

Maggie Hickey, Green Mountain
(Fr. - Chesterville, Maine)

Racing in her first collegiate meet, Hickey was the lead runner for the Eagles at the Southern Vermont College Mountaineer Invitational on Saturday. The freshman placed fifth overall out of 59 runners in a time of 24:10 over the challenging mountainous 5K course. Her result along with two other top ten times by Eagles runners helped the team place first overall out of nine teams competing.

Castleton opened its season with a second-place team finish at the 5K Southern Vermont Invitational on Saturday. The Spartans finished with a score of 47 points, just four points behind Green Mountain for the meet title. Kaylyn Crompton picked up right where she left off last season, capturing first place in the race by nearly two full minutes. Freshman Megan Greene brought home a top-10 finish in eighth and was followed closely by teammate Rachael Emery, who placed 11th overall. The Spartans will now bring their early-season momentum back home, as they host the Castleton Invitational on Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m.

Colby-Sawyer opened 2017 by placing third out of seven at Saturday's UMaine-Farmington Invitational. Senior Lauren Oligny paced the Chargers with a top-10 finish in the 5k race in ninth at 21:46. The Chargers will have this week off from competition.

UMaine-Farmington took second place at the UMF Invitational.

Green Mountain, backed by several top ten finishes, opened the season with a first place showing at the Southern Vermont Mountaineer Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning. While the Eagles didn't have anyone earn a podium finish, the collection of three top ten finishes and a pair of others right around the top 15 placed the Eagles ahead of the nine team contingent. Freshman Maggie Hickey led all racers with a fifth place finish in a time of 24:10 over the 5K course. The Eagles will look to continue their opening week success when they head to Castleton on Saturday.

Husson opened up the 2017 season at the Fens Classic on Saturday morning, walking away with two top ten finishes and third place overall at the event. Lindsey Joliat finished the two mile run in 13:20 for the Eagles' top time of the day, good enough for sixth place at the meet. Shortly after, Morgan Clifford passed through with a time of 13:32 to take ninth.

Johnson placed second at the Mountaineer Invitational hosted by Southern Vermont College on Saturday. Brynn Cairns and Lily Denmeade led the way for the Badgers finishing second and fourth, respectively. Johnson will be off this week before hosting the Badger Invitational on September 16.

Lyndon will open the season at the Plymouth State Invitational on Saturday.

Maine Maritime placed sixth at the UMaine Farmington Invitational. Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) finished 42 overall out of 85 runners to lead Maine Maritime, running the 5K course in a time of 25:09.3. The Mariners return to action next Saturday at the UNE Invitational.

New England College saw Abby Shafer (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) headline the Pilgrims at the UMaine Farmington Invitational, clocking in a first-place finish and the only sub-20 time of the field. Freshman Isabela Fast (Chester, N.H.) finished 25th in her collegiate debut. As a team, the Pilgrims finished fifth. The team heads to Castleton next weekend for an 11:00 a.m. race time.

UMaine-Presque Isle finished seventh at the Farmington Invitational, the Owls featured a team with many young runners. They look forward to continuing to improve at the Husson Invitational next week.

Thomas competed in the UMF 5K invitational on Saturday. Senior runner Alyssa Maggi paced the Terriers as she finished 70th with a time of 29:25. The next event for the Terriers will be on Saturday, September 9, as they participate in the UNE Invitational.
