Castleton sweeps North Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championships
Castleton, VT-The Castleton State College Spartans swept the North Atlantic Conference cross country championships in terrible conditions. With wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour and heavy rain, both Castleton teams placed three runners in the top seven to earn the NAC titles.
Mens 8,000 meter: Castleton State College took home the title with a team score of 45, 16 points better than runner-up Lasell. Taking home the top spot in the race was U. Maine-Farmington's Drew Croteau (Durham, CT) in a time of 30:03.57. With the victory Croteau also earns NAC runner of the year honors. Finishing second in the mens race was Castleton's Chris Gatchell (Waterford, ME) in a time of 20:50.88. Right on Gatchell's heels was Nick Grasso (Schenectady, NY), who finished in 30:51.32. Castleton's Mike Sullivan (Granby, CT) scored in fourth place with a time of 31:44.1. Rounding out the top five was Johnson States Gabe McConkey (Afton, VA) with a time of 31:51.18.
Women's 5,000 meter: Castleton State College also won the women's title with a team score of 33. The Spartan women placed four scorers in the top 10 to win the title by just nine points over runner-up U. Maine-Farmington. Earning runner of the year honors, and finishing first was Farmington's Emily Farley (Mt. Desert Island, ME) in a time of 21:55.92. A trio of Castleton runners followed Farley to the finish line, Katie Sprowl (Rochester, NH) came in second at 22:04.62, Elizabeth Halnon (Blackstone, MA) at 22:18.32 and Justine Campbell (Queensbury, NY) at 22:24.46. Rounding out the top five was Lasell's Kayla McKenna (Warwick, RI) at 22:59.23.
